LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Despite having control for most of the match, the Covenant men's soccer team fell for the first time in 2013 with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Transylvania on Friday afternoon. The host team netted two scores in the final 10-plus minutes of action to secure the victory. It was the first match in the Transylvania Showcase.
Covenant falls to 1-1-1 on the year while Transylvania improves to 2-1.
Coming off a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night against Sewanee, the Scots again seemed to dominate possession but could not find the back of the net. Covenant outshot the Pioneers 15-9 and 7-6 in shots on goal.
Transylvania got the game-winner in the 80th minute of play as Kyle Smith scored off an assist from Ryan Stallings to make it 1-0. The Pioneers would add to their score in the 90th minute with Eric Froschauer scoring, assist to Matt Melzer.
Covenant had multiple chances, especially in the opening period. The Scots had five shots on goal in the first half, but Transylvania keeper Taylor Nossokoff made saves on all five. Garrison Dale and Hunter Harrison each took four shots for Covenant.
Shuler Polk made four saves at net for the Scots. Nossokoff and Cody Waltrip shared the duties of keeper for Transylvania with Nossokoff making five saves and Waltrip two.
Covenant will look to get back to its winning ways on Saturday when they play Hanover at 2 p.m. to conclude the Transylvania showcase.
