LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- It is homecoming weekend on Lookout Mountain for the Covenant Scots. The men's soccer team faced off against the Tennessee Temple Crusaders at Scotland Yard in front of a capacity crowd and came away with a 3-0 victory with three second half goals.
After a scoreless first half, the Scots and the Crusaders were evenly matched until late in the second half. Up until the 75th minute, it remained scoreless. That's when Scots forward Noah Wiersema broke through the defense and received a pass from Joel Friesen to kick it into the back of the net. Wiersema's goal was his second of the season.
Matt Hudnut continued to score for the Scots in the 83rd minute after receiving a pass from Barrett Schmidt 30 yards out and shooting it in the goal. Six minutes later, Hudnut managed to score another goal for the Scots off a pass from David Huertas into the back corner. Hudnut currently leads the Scots in goals with five for the season.
Covenant outshot Tennessee Temple 24-4. Tyler Morrison led Covenant (7-6) with six shots and one on goal, while Hudnut followed with five of his own shots and four on goal along with two goals. Chris Pifer had four shots with two on goal.
Covenant keeper Shuler Polk never needed to make a save in his 90 minutes of play. Tennessee Temple keeper Josue Fernandez made seven saves for the Crusaders (5-7).
The Scots travel to Birmingham, Ala., to play the Birmingham Southern on Wednesday, October 10th at 8 p.m.
