LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Same ending, different night. Matt Hudnut came through again with a game-winning score in the first overtime as the Covenant Scots defeated LaGrange College 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night.
Hudnut repeated his trademark game-winning goal from just a night ago. Hudnut gave the Scots a 3-2 victory with a score in the 99th minute on Friday against Greenville. On this night, Hudnut received a pass from Joel Friesen and took the shot eight yards out and got it past Panthers keeper Donnie Palmer in the 96th minute. The score for Hudnut was his third of the season.
Fans and players alike had to wait to make sure Hudnut was not offside before celebrating the "golden goal," but the referees made no signal and the goal stood giving the Scots their third straight win.
Covenant took the lead early on in the fifth minute of the first half. Garrison Dale's corner kick deflected off the back of the keeper and into the net for a goal, his second of the year, to make it 1-0.
The Panthers soon had an opportunity for a goal in the 75th minute. Panthers forward Kevin Folsom managed to dribble past the Covenant defense and put it in the back of the net. Folsom's goal tied up the match and sent the game into overtime.
Covenant (4-5) forward Tyler Morrison led the Scots in shots with seven the entire match with four on goal. Hudnut followed up with three shots, with two on goal. Covenant led LaGrange in shots 22-9.
Covenant keeper Shuler Polk made two saves for the game. Panthers (2-5) keeper Palmer made 10 saves of the 12 shots on goal.
The Scots play against Oglethorpe University at home on September 26th. The match starts at Scotland Yard at 7 p.m.
