  • Eger Named NCCAA All-American Honorable Mention

    The accolades keep rolling in for the Covenant Scots soccer team. This week, the NCCAA announced its 2011 Men’s Soccer All-American team and Scots goalkeeper John Eger was named honorable mention.

    This week at Covenant marked the official start to the winter season of basketball, and to kick it off, hundreds of students came out for the “Royal Blue-Out” at the men’s and women’s first game. Meanwhile, men’s and women’s soccer, as well as volleyball, all competed in their NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament but were unable to advance into the national tournament stage.

    Tyler Morrison scored a hat trick in Friday’s 4-2 semifinal victory over Asbury University to help the Scots soccer team advance to the NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship game.
  • Covenant’s Fall Playoff Picture

    While Covenant’s golf and cross country programs have concluded their fall seasons, the Scots volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer teams have been gearing up for the 2011 postseason. Action will commence Thursday, Nov. 17 as the Lady Scots volleyball team will begin pool play at Oakland City University. Friday will feature more from the volleyball team along with semifinal matchups for each of Covenant’s soccer teams. Results will be posted on Covenant’s schedule pages as well as the athletic website of the host institution. Additional information can be found here:
  • Scots JV Team to Host League Championship

    The Covenant Scots JV men’s soccer team will play host to the Maryville College JV team for the 2011 League Championship Monday evening. Covenant finished 4-5-5 at the end of the regular season before advancing past Truett-McConnell College via penalty kicks in the semifinal round early last week. Maryville defeated Bryan College 1-0 in its semifinal matchup and looks to find redemption from the 2-1 loss it suffered at the hands of the Covenant Scots the last time the two teams met.

  • Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 10 (Oct. 31 – Nov. 5)

    Week 10 was full of senior nights as the Covenant volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer teams had their final regular season matches at home. On Tuesday night, the Lady Scots volleyball team closed out its 2011 home campaign with a great match against Tennessee Wesleyan College. The following evening, the women’s basketball team had their first official exhibition game against a club team from the Dominican Republic. Men’s and women’s soccer then finished off the week by playing Berry College in their senior nights.

    The Great South Athletic Conference has released its 2011 All-Academic honorees for the fall season, and Covenant College is proud to announce 26 of its athletes as recipients.
  • Four Scots Earn All-GSAC Honors

    The Great South Athletic Conference announced its 2011 Men’s Soccer award winners on Thursday and four Covenant Scots have been honored by the conference. Tyler Morrison and Matt Hudnut were placed on the All-Conference team while Ian Meredith and Hunter Harrison were named All-Freshman.
  • Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 9 (Oct 24-29)

    As the fall sport season is beginning to come to a close, Covenant athletic teams are still fighting hard. The NCCAA National Championship of golf took place this week. Also, cross country competed in the Great South conference meet that was held in Chattanooga at the Chickamauga Dam. The men’s and women’s soccer teams played on Tuesday and Saturday while women’s volleyball continues their great season by winning twice more on Saturday.
  • Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 7 & 8 (Oct 10-22)

    Covenant’s week seven and eight consisted of the college’s first break from class, but rather than taking a break, the Scots and Lady Scots were hard at work on the road. Women’s volleyball went all the way to Pensacola Christian College in Florida to beat the host Lady Eagles 3-0. Women’s soccer played twice. Men’s golf had their third tournament of the season on Monday and Tuesday. Men’s soccer continued its win streak against Emory & Henry College on Wednesday night. Though the teams may have taken a break from school, they did not take a break from their sports.
  • Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 6 (Oct 3-8)

    Week six on the Covenant athletics scene began with golf, followed by men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball on Wednesday, then ended at Homecoming on Saturday night after big wins by both teams. Men’s golf played another tournament on Friday and Saturday. Though the week on the whole was not too hectic, Homecoming had a huge crowd and their victory was followed by fireworks.
  • Covenant Athletic Recap: Week 5 (Sept 26- Oct 1)

    This week, nearly all of the athletic events took place at home, with each team enjoying the comforts of their own court or field. As preview students from all over the country came to visit the campus, Covenant’s sports teams played in several competitions. Women’s volleyball hosted Cumberland University on Tuesday night, and then went on the road to take on Salem College and Maryville College on Saturday. On Friday night, the women’s soccer team played an outstanding game, coming from behind to defeat Agnes Scott College. The men’s team followed on Saturday and played The University of Alabama- Huntsville in a high-stress game. This followed their victory from earlier in the week when they scored 4 goals against Tennessee Temple University. Finally, the Cross Country teams ran in beautiful weather at the Maryville College Invitational and were extremely successful.
  • Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 4 (Sept 19-24)

    Covenant athletics had a busy schedule for the 4th week of the season. The cross country teams hosted a home race in Chattanooga and made a great showing. Men’s soccer went into overtime, with the score tied 0-0, but allowed a goal with only 2 minutes left in double overtime. Women’s volleyball beat 3 teams, all at home and by definitive margins. Women’s soccer played twice, working hard, but were not able to come up with a win.
  • Ian Meredith Wins GSAC, Covenant Player of the Week

    Freshman forward Ian Meredith has been named the Great South Athletic Conference and Covenant College Player of the Week for the week ending September 17. Meredith led the Scots to a 2-1 victory over Guilford College in the team’s only game of the week. His two instrumental shots- and consequent goals- were the difference for the Scots in getting their first win of the season.
  • Former Scot Soccer Player Pursues His Calling to Marshall University

    This time last year, David Pifer was playing in his final season as the starting winger for the Covenant College men’s soccer team. Lesser known, he was also beginning his final year as one of the school’s sports writers and Bagpipe sports editor. At the time, playing soccer was what occupied his mind and time. Scoring eight goals and leading the Scots on an impressive 11 game win-streak required him to put his athletic skills to full use.

    Week three held plenty of exciting moments for Covenant’s athletic teams. John Eger received the Student-Athlete of the Week from the NCCAA, while women’s volleyball had its first rematch against the University of the Cumberlands. Tera Woods and Zach Smith also received awards as the Great South Players of the Week for cross country.
  • Meredith’s Goals Give Scots First Victory

    Freshman Ian Meredith scored twice, both times from about 18 yards out, to help the Covenant Scots get their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Guilford College on Saturday afternoon.
  • NCCAA Names John Eger as Student-Athlete of the Week

    Each week, a male and a female athlete of the week are chosen for both Division I and II schools of the National Christian College Athletic Conference for each active sport. The award comes based on the individuals’ performances during the week and their nomination by their coaches. This week, senior John Eger is given the award for men’s soccer player of the week.
  • Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 2 (Sept 5-10)

    Week two for Covenant College athletics consisted of almost all road games, with the exception of one volleyball match on Monday against the University of the Cumberlands. The week featured the volleyball team’s first tournament while the men’s soccer team played both Travecca-Nazarene University and Cumberland University in a two-day, tournament-type atmosphere. Women’s soccer played a tough game in Kentucky against Asbury University, and the cross country teams ran in the Berry College Invitational.

Just in the first week of the fall season, we have already experienced some remarkable sports moments, with many more sure to come. Though at the same time, there have been some rough spots that the teams will likely remove as the season continues on.

  • Covenant Hires Drew Courtney as Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach

    Drew Courtney, a Chattanooga, Tennessee native, has been hired as Covenant College’s Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach. Courtney replaces former assistant Shane Dasher, who recently moved to Montreat, North Carolina to pursue a head coaching position with the Montreat College Cavaliers.
