LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Coming off the most successful season in the NCAA era of the program, the Covenant men's golf team looks to build off that success in the 2019-20 season.

Head coach Tom Schreiner, in his ninth year overall at the helm of the program, has his Scots opening up the season on Monday at the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational.

The tournament starts a busy month of October for the Scots. Covenant will compete in four events throughout the month, including the Piedmont Fall Invitational (Oct. 14-15) and the Chick-fil-A Invitational (Oct. 21-22).

Last season, Covenant set numerous program records and climbed the national rankings. The Scots produced the top four low-round scores in program history, and the top three scores relative to par. During the fall, Covenant climbed to No. 69 in the nation, its highest ranking in the NCAA era.

Covenant saw two of its top golfers from last year, Marshall Kent and Josh Wall, graduate but Schreiner's young squad still returns talent. Senior Nathan Hawkins has led the Scots in scoring average in each of his first three years and returns to lead this season. Hawkins shot a 75.59 last season, the third-best single-season average in program history, while tying the program's round score of 68.

Sophomores Will DeMersseman and Crawford Collett both return and look to build off quality freshman seasons. DeMersseman averaged a 78.50 in 16 rounds last season and was a USA South Rookie of the Week award winner after placing in the top-10 at the Reeder Cup. Collett came on during the spring season and posted a low-round score of 74, while playing in a pair of tournaments.

Two-sport senior James Mitchell enters his third year on the golf team. Mitchell, also a standout on the men's basketball team, played in four tournaments last year and posted a 79.60.

Sophomore Isaac Duncan rounds out the returners. Schreiner believes Duncan is the most improved player he has coached at Covenant. The lone newcomer on the team is freshman John Livingston.

Schreiner has set his spring schedule that includes four tournaments.

The Scots will open the spring on Feb. 10-11 at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational. It will be the fourth straight year that Covenant has started the spring portion of its schedule at the Coastal Georgia tournament.

Covenant then gets back in action in March with the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate (March 2-3) and the Wynlakes Invitational (March 30-31). Both tournaments will feature some of the top teams in the region as the Scots look to qualify for the USA South Tournament.

The final regular season tournament is the Rhodes Spring Classic on April 6-7. Last year, Covenant set multiple program records at the 54-hole tournament.

The USA South Tournament is set for April 23-25 in Rocky Mount, N.C., at Benvenue Golf Club. The top nine teams, as rated by, will qualify for the tournament.
