MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's golf team produced its best team score over a 36-hole stretch in program history and the Scots sit in eighth after the first two rounds of the Rhodes Spring Classic, hosted at the Windyke Country Club, on Monday.
Covenant posted a program record 293 (+5) on the par-72 course in Monday's first round and then followed that with a 294 (+6) in the second round of the day. The Scots' 587 is the best score over a 36-hole period in the program's history.
The Scots sit three shots back of No. 41-ranked Webster for seventh, as the field contains five top-50 ranked teams in the latest GolfStat rankings. No. 22 Berry leads the field after a 569 (286-283) on Monday.
Nathan Hawkins carded a 2-under, 70 in the first round on Monday and followed that with an even-par, 72 in the second round. Hawkins' 2-under for the tournament places him in a tie for eighth overall. Hawkins posted six birdies in the first round and had three more in the second round.
Josh Wall shot a career-best 72 in the first round, including an eagle on the par-5, 14th hole, and then shot a 73 in the second round as he sits in a tie for 21st overall. Marshall Kent had a 73 in the second round, shaving seven strokes off his first round score, while Will DeMersseman had a 78 followed by a 76. James Mitchell rounded out the Covenant golfers with a 73 in the opening round and an 81 in the second round.
Maryville's Wil Manuel is the clubhouse leader entering Tuesday's final round after going 8-under with a pair of 68s on Monday.
