Wall, DeMersseman Lead Men's Golf in Opening Round of Phoenix Invitational

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. -- Josh Wall and Will DeMersseman both carded a 77 to lead the Covenant men's golf team in the first round of the Phoenix Invitational on Monday.

The opening round of the tournament, which is being hosted by Cumberland (Tenn.) at Old Hickory Country Club, featured cool temperatures and very windy conditions at the course located outside Nashville, Tenn. 

Covenant shot a 314 as a team and sits in ninth overall entering Tuesday's final round.

Wall and DeMersseman had a 77 each to lead the Scots in the opening round. Both players are in a tie for 29th overall, along with seven other players in the field. Nathan Hawkins was just two strokes back of Wall and DeMersseman as his 79 has him in a tie for 39th in the field. James Mitchell posted an 81 to complete the Scots' scoring for the day, while Marshall Kent opened the tournament with an 83.

Host Cumberland leads the field with a 289 with Martin Methodist (291) and Union (Tenn.) (293) rounding out the top three teams after the first round. Lindsey Wilson's Callum Blinkhorn and Union's Jordan Botwinick are the clubhouse leaders after shooting a 69 each at the par-71 course.

The final round of the Phoenix Invitational is set for Tuesday morning at Old Hickory Country Club. Shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. CDT.
