SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Covenant men's golf team finished 17th in a field loaded with top Division III teams at the Savannah Harbor Classic, which concluded on Tuesday.
Covenant entered the tournament after being rained out of the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate. The Scots were part of the 18-team field that included 12 teams ranked in the top 50 nationally, according to GolfStat.com.
Nathan Hawkins led the way for Covenant as he posted a 36-hole score of 163 (79-84) to place in a tie for 72nd overall. Marshall Kent carded a 167 (82-85) and Crawford Collett was at 168 (88-80) for the tournament. Will DeMersseman shot a pair of 85s for the event to finish at 170, while Josh Wall rounded out the Covenant golfers at 172 (92-80).
As a team, Covenant shot a 334 in the opening round on Monday before improving five strokes for a 329 in Tuesday's final round.
Huntingdon, ranked No. 3 in the nation, came away with the team title as the Hawks carded a 586 (296-290) for the tournament. Methodist's Dan Shepherd was the medalist with a 1-under, 143 (72-71).
Covenant is scheduled to compete in the Phoenix Invitational on April 1-2, hosted by Cumberland (Tenn.) at the Five Oaks Course in Lebanon, Tenn.
