ROCKFORD, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's golf team shot a program-record 295, including a record-tying 68 from Nathan Hawkins, and finished second at the Maryville Fall Invitational that concluded on Tuesday at the par-70, 6,432 yard, Egwani Farms course in Rockford.
The Scots improved their team score by 15 strokes from Monday's opening round to Tuesday's final round. Covenant finished with a 36-hole score of 605 (310-295) to place second behind host Maryville (579, 289-290). The 295 is the top total score in program history.
Hawkins finished second overall after his program-record tying 68 on Tuesday. The junior finished the tournament with a two-day score of 141 (73-68). In the final round, Hawkins carded six birdies to go 2-under for the day. Hawkins was only beaten in the tournament by Maryville's Tyler Bray, who shot a 136 (69-67) to claim medalist honors.
Josh Wall and Marshall Kent shot a 74 and 75, respectively, on Tuesday as Wall placed in a tie for 16th in the field and Kent was 18th. Wall's 36-hole score was 153 (79-74), while Kent posted a 154 (79-75) in the tournament. Will Mayfield was 22nd as he shot a 78 on Tuesday and completed the two-day event with a score of 157 (79-78). Matthew Harvie rounded out the five Covenant golfers with a tournament score of 181 (89-92).
Covenant finished nine strokes ahead of Southern Virginia and toppled Emory & Henry, which was second after Monday's first round, to place second in the field.
