ROME, Ga. -- Marshall Kent sits in a tie for third after shooting a 1-under, 71 to lead the Covenant men's golf team to seventh place after round one of the Chick-fil-A Invitational at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome on Monday.
Covenant shot a 303 as a team and is tied for seventh in the 19-team field that features several top-50 ranked Division III programs. Central Alabama Community College leads the stacked field after carding a 2-under, 286 on Monday. The Scots are three shots back of Birmingham Southern and four back of teams from Berry and Emory.
Kent is tied for third in the field and is four strokes back of clubhouse leader Noah Dennis of Central Alabama. Kent had a strong round as he carded five birdies on the day, including three on the front nine, before finishing with another birdie on his final hole.
Nathan Hawkins recorded a 75 in the opening round and is tied for 28th in the field. Will DeMersseman birdied three times in his front nine and finished the round with a 77 and is tied for 47th overall. Josh Wall posted an 80, including a birdie on his final hole of the round, while Will Mayfield rounded out the five Scots golfers with an 86. Mayfield was one of nine players in the field to record an eagle as he made a 3 on the par-5, 14th hole.
