LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Led by first place finishes from Marshall Kent and Nathan Hawkins, the Covenant men's golf team captured the 2018 Reeder Cup title on Tuesday at a rainy and chilly Lookout Mountain Club.
It is the first tournament title for the Scots since 2013 when Covenant won the Piedmont Fall Invitational. The Scots shot an even 300 in Tuesday's final round to finish at 597 (297-300) for the tournament and overcome second place Piedmont's 611 (294-317). Bob Jones placed third in the tournament with a 633 (309-324).
The tournament score of 597 is the second-lowest 36-hole tournament score for the Scots in program history.
Kent and Hawkins tied for first with Piedmont's Griffin Kern at 8-over, 148 for the tournament. The three players went on to a playoff and Kern eventually outlasted the Covenant duo on the fourth hole with his par on No. 13 to win medalist honors.
Kent shot a 73 on Tuesday, two strokes better than his first round score. The senior had four birdies in the round and finished even-par over the final four holes to force a three-way tie for first. It was Kent's second top-five finish of the year after placing second at the Piedmont Fall Invitational earlier this month.
Will DeMersseman tied with Kent for the low-round score on Tuesday with his 73. The freshman finished in a tie for sixth overall with a two-day score of 151 (78-73) as he had a strong round that featured birdies on the first and last hole of the round. Hawkins carded a 79 to finish the tournament at 148 (69-79) and place in the three-way tie for first.
Josh Wall also finished inside the top 10 as he posted a 75, one stroke better than his first round 76, to finish at 151. Will Mayfield was 15th in the field after an 86 on Tuesday led to a tournament score of 163 (77-86). As an individual, Matthew Harvie finished at a 174 (74-90) while Isaac Duncan was at 199 (103-96).
Covenant will compete in the Chick-fil-A Invitational on Oct. 22-23 in Rome, Ga.
