LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant men's golf junior Nathan Hawkins fired a 1-under, 69 to lead the Scots to a program-record tying 297 in the first round of the Reeder Cup at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club on Monday.
Hawkins is the clubhouse leader after his career-best 69. The junior is two shots ahead of Piedmont's Josh DeSain and Griffin Kern heading into Tuesday's final round. Piedmont leads the three-team field after shooting a 294 in the opening round, while Bob Jones is third with a 309.
As a team, Covenant tied a program record with a 297 score, a mark that had not been touched since 2008. It is only the third time in program history that the Scots have broken 300 as a group.
Hawkins birdied twice on the front nine and had three birdies on the day. He recovered from a double-bogey on the 12th hole to go 1-under the rest of the way. Hawkins' 69 was just one shot off the Covenant individual record of 68 for a round.
Several other Scots also had strong rounds. Marshall Kent finished the round with a 75 and Josh Wall carded a 76 on the par-70 course. Will Mayfield tallied a pair of birdies and finished with a 77, while Will DeMersseman made his collegiate debut with a 78.
Playing as an individual, Matthew Harvie posted an 84.
