CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -- The Covenant men's golf team opened the 2018-19 season on Monday and posted a 310 to sit in third after round one of the 13th annual Piedmont Fall Invitational at The Orchard Golf & Country Club.
Covenant's round was good for third in the nine-team field. Defending national champion Methodist is in the lead after the Monarchs posted a 294, while host Piedmont is second at 297. The Scots sit two spots ahead of Sewanee and four in front of USA South member Berea heading into Tuesday's final round.
Marshall Kent is seventh overall after he carded an opening-round 74 and is three strokes behind clubhouse co-leaders Matthew Leeman (Piedmont) and Adam Park (Abraham Baldwin). Kent was three-over on the front nine, but thrived over the final nine holes by shooting a one-under, 35. Kent birdied three holes on the back nine, including consecutive holes on the par 3, 11th followed by the par 4, 12th.
Will Mayfield posted a 76 in the first round and is tied for 11th in the field. Mayfield carded three birdies on the front nine and had four total on the day. Nathan Hawkins and Josh Wall each shot an 80 to sit in a tie for 27th, while James Mitchell rounded out the Covenant golfers with his 85.
The final round of the Piedmont Fall Invitational is set to begin on Tuesday morning at The Orchard Golf & Country Club.
