LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Covenant sophomore golfer Nathan Hawkins shot a 77 in the opening round of the USA South Tournament on Thursday at the Highland Country Club in LaGrange.
Hawkins is tied for 24th in the 54-hole tournament. North Carolina Wesleyan's Grady Anderson is the clubhouse leader after round one as he carded a 4-under, 68 on Thursday. No. 3-ranked Methodist leads the field as a team after posting 289.
Hawkins' 77 was two strokes better than his first round in last year's event, a tournament in which he placed 13th overall. The sophomore began his round on Thursday by shooting a 2-over, 38 on the front nine. Hawkins birdied the par-5, 10th hole to get back to just 1-over par. Hawkins would also birdie the par-5, 16th hole and finished the back nine with a 39.
Hawkins is one of three individuals in the field. William Peace's Trey Capps is also an individual and shot a 76, while Berea's Kevin Kim posted an 86.
