MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant men's golf team shot 12 strokes better in the final round of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate, hosted by Huntingdon at the Wynlakes Golf & Country Club, on Tuesday.
The Scots finished 16th in the tournament after carding a 324 in the final round. Covenant finished the tournament with a two-day score of 660 (336-324). No. 26-ranked Wittenberg was the team champions it rallied past No. 3 Huntingdon. Drew Mathers of Huntingdon was the medalist after finishing with a 2-under par, 142 (70-72) for the tournament.
Four of the five Covenant golfers improved their scores from round one. Nathan Hawkins ended the tournament as the top Scot as he carded an 80 to finish the two-day event at 159 (79-80) and tied for 54th overall. Josh Wall shaved three strokes off his first round score as he also posted an 80 in Tuesday's final round to end at 163 (83-80).
Will Mayfield also improved his score by three shots with his 83 on Tuesday to end the tournament at 169 (86-83). Marshall Kent, who aced a hole on Monday, wrapped up play with a two-day score of 172 (88-84). James Mitchell saw the biggest improvement in the final round as he recorded a season-best 81 after posting a 98 in Monday's first round.
This was the last scheduled event for Covenant before the USA South Tournament. The Scots will await to see if they are one of the top-9 ranked conference teams, as determined by GolfStat rankings, in order to qualify for the conference tournament, which begins on April 12 in LaGrange, Ga. Additionally, the top three golfers not on a tournament-qualifying team will earn a berth to the league tournament as an individual.
