SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Making the trek across the country, the Covenant men's golf team opened The Master's University Spring Invite on Monday at Sand Canyon Country Club in Santa Clarita. Nathan Hawkins led the Scots in the first round with his 74 and Covenant sits in 10th heading into Tuesday's final round.
The tournament, hosted by NAIA member The Master's, features five NCAA Division III programs along with Division II and NAIA teams. Also in the field competing as individuals are golfers from Division I programs UCLA, Michigan, and Cal Poly.
The Master's leads the field after shooting a 294 as a team on Monday. Marymount (Calif.) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps are close behind at two and three, respectively. Covenant posted a 324 in the first round, but sits just two shots back of William Jessup and four back of Pomona-Pitzer. Samuel Eisenhuth of The Master's has the clubhouse lead after carding a 3-under, 69 on Monday.
Hawkins is five strokes off the lead as he posted a season-best 74 in his first round and is 12th in the field. Marshall Kent shot an 80 in the opening round and Josh Wall posted an 83. Will Mayfield rounded out the scoring in the first round with his 83.
The final round of the tournament will begin on Tuesday morning at Sand Canyon Country Club.
