ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Faced with much more difficult weather conditions on Tuesday, the Covenant men's golf team dropped two places from Monday's first round and finished 16th at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational at Sea Island Retreat Golf Course.
A chilly, cloudy, and windy day greeted golfers for the final round and most teams in the 21-team field struggled to put up the same numbers they did in round one. Host Coastal Georgia took the team title with a score of 581 (277-304) as Mark Johnson led the field with his 3-under, 141 (65-76) for the tournament. Keiser placed second in the event with a 590 (290-300).
Covenant was led by Nathan Hawkins' 34th place finish overall. The sophomore carded an 81, a low round for the Scots on the day, to finish at 156 (75-81) for the 36-hole tournament. Josh Wall followed with an 83 in the final round and placed 52nd in the field with his 160 (77-83), while Marshall Kent was a stroke behind at 161 (76-85). Will Mayfield round out the four Scots golfers in the event with a 177 (83-94).
The Scots finished 16th in the field as the team posted a score of 343 in the final round and a 654 (311-343) for the tournament.
Covenant will head across the country on Feb. 26-27 to take part in The Master's University Spring Invite at the Sand Canyon Country Club in Santa Clarita, Calif.
