ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- The Covenant men's golf team opened up the spring portion of its season on Monday by shooting a 311 and placing 14th after the first round of the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational, played at the Sea Island Retreat Golf Course.
Covenant sits in 14th, out of 21 teams, after round one. The Scots' 311 is the second-lowest team round score of the season.
Nathan Hawkins led the way for Covenant with his 75 in the first round, tied for 29th overall. Hawkins carded four birdies in his round. Marshall Kent had a pair of birdies on the day and finished with a 76, while Josh Wall posted three birdies and scored a 77. Will Mayfield finished his first round with an 83.
Host Coastal Georgia leads the field after it dropped an 11-under, 277 in the first round. Keiser (290) North Georgia (291) and SCAD-Savannah (294) round out the top four teams heading into Tuesday's final round. Coastal Georgia's Mark Johnson is the clubhouse leader after shooting a 7-under, 65 on Monday.
Final round action begins on Tuesday morning.
