LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2017-18 season is set to begin for the Covenant men's golf program. Under head coach Tom Schreiner, the Scots begin play at the 12th annual Piedmont Fall Invitational on Oct. 2-3 at the Orchard Golf & Country Club in Clarkesville, Ga.
Schreiner, in his second year since returning as the program's head coach, has the core group of players returning from last year's team that qualified for the USA South Tournament. It is a young, but experienced, group that features just two seniors and four players in either their sophomore or junior years that played significantly in 2016-17.
Junior Marshall Kent and sophomore Nathan Hawkins were consistently the top two players for Covenant a season ago. Kent has thrived in the Piedmont Fall Invitational as he placed sixth in his freshman year, and then nearly won the event last year before finishing second. Hawkins came on strong in the second half of last season, and finished the year with a 13th place finish at the USA South Tournament. Hawkins led the team in scoring average at 79.20.
Sophomore Will Mayfield and junior Josh Wall also saw success last season and look to improve upon those numbers. Mayfield posted a season-best 73 early in the year, while Wall had a strong finish to the season in the final two rounds of the USA South Tournament.
After next week's opener at Piedmont, the Scots will compete in the Chick-fil-A Invitational on Oct. 23-24 and then wrap-up the fall season at the Eagle Invitational on Oct. 30-31.
Schreiner also recently released the spring portion of the schedule. The marquee event for the Scots is a trek across the country in late February to take part in The Master's University Spring Invite in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Feb. 26-27. The two-day event will be played at Sand Canyon Country Club.
The spring will start at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational at Sea Island Retreat Course on Feb. 12-13. In March, the Scots will make familiar trips to the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate (March 6-7) and Wynlakes Invitational (March 27-28).
The USA South Tournament, which takes the top nine teams in the conference according to GolfStat rankings, is set for April 12-14 in LaGrange, Ga., at Highlands Country Club.
