ASHLAND, Va. -- The Covenant men's golf team shaved 16 strokes off its first round score and moved up two spots to finish 11th in the 18-team Ted Keller Memorial Invitational at the par-70 Hanover Country Club.
Covenant shot a 313 in the final round on Tuesday and moved up to 11th after sitting in 13th heading into the day. The Scots finished with a score of 642 (329-313) and moved past USA South member Averett, along with Stevenson, to place 11th in the event.
Will Mayfield led the charge on Tuesday with a season-low round of 73. Mayfield's 73, a 10-stroke improvement over round one, put him in a tie for 25th individually after carding a 156 (83-73) for the tournament. Marshall Kent posted a 78 in the final round to place in a tie for 33rd with a 158 (80-78), while Alan Craig moved up to a tie for 54th after shooting a 79 and finishing with a 164 (85-79) for the event. Nathan Hawkins also finished 54th with his two-day score of 164 (81-83).
Franklin & Marshall took the team title with a 601 (297-304), while Gettysburg's Dane Sethre-Hofstad was the medalist with a score of 7-over, 147 (70-77) for the tournament.
Covenant will compete next week in the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 17-18 in Rome, Ga., at Stonebridge Golf Club.
