David Conrady Named New Head Golf Coach

David Conrady Named New Head Golf Coach

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant College Director of Athletics Kyle Taylor announced on Thursday that David Conrady has been named the school's new head golf coach, becoming the fourth head coach in the program's history.

Conrady will oversee both the men's and women's programs and will continue to work as National Basketball Director for SCORE International.

"I want to thank Kyle Taylor and Dr. Halvorson for the opportunity to be a part of the Covenant College 'family' by allowing to me the chance lead the Scots golf program," said Conrady. "I am very excited to begin working with the tremendous student athletes on this team."

Conrady is just the fourth coach in program history after John Conrad, Tom Schreiner and, most recently, Trevor Potts.

"I hope to build on the foundation of success laid by Coach Schreiner and Coach Potts," remarked Conrady. "It is my goal to help these student athletes grow athletically, academically and in their spiritual walk with Christ. In my current position with SCORE International and throughout my 23 years of coaching at the collegiate level, I have always tried to teach the biblical life lessons found in sports. I plan to use my platform as 'coach' to continue that at Covenant College."

"We are so excited to welcome David Conrady and his family to the Covenant Athletic community," said Taylor. "This has been a very long and hard search for us and I'm grateful that it is over. I'm also pleased that we found the right coach for the job. I told the team and their parents that we were not going to compromise and settle on a coach, but that we would wait until we found someone who could disciple, coach, recruit, and lead this golf program at the quality level that all our athletic programs are run. David Conrady is the right coach for this position, and I'm grateful that God orchestrated it in His timing not mine."

Conrady spent six years on the men's basketball coaching staff at Chattanooga from 2004-10 and helped the Mocs to two NCAA tournament appearances and Southern Conference (SoCon) tournament titles. Additionally, UTC won three SoCon North division titles and was only one of four NCAA Division I schools to play in their conference championship game four consecutive seasons during Conrady's tenure.

Before arriving at UTC, Conrady was the head men's basketball coach at Newberry College for two seasons and led the NCAA Division II member to 16 wins, the most victories the program had in a year since 1981-82, and a South Atlantic Conference tournament championship appearance in 2004.

Conrady wasn't limited to basketball coaching, however. He served as the head golf coach at Mars Hill College for two seasons (1993-95) where he started the program. In addition to his golf coaching duties, Conrady taught a Golf Skill and Rules class at Mars Hill for three years.

While he was in graduate school at Furman, Conrady was a counselor at the Yamaha Golf School where he was responsible for video instruction and assisted in swing evaluation. Conrady also served as a caddie during "Futures" events for Denise Killeen (Baldwin) prior to her LPGA career which included nine top-10 finishes.

"Having a limited 'golfing' background, my initial input will be helping my athletes with the mental side of the game. There are many similarities in the golf swing and shooting a free throw for example," Conrady added about the transition from a basketball coach to a golf coach. "You need to have the ability to trust your muscle memory in stressful situations. You have to have the ability to learn from the past, but not dwell on it. Move on to the next shot. These are areas where I can have an immediate impact on their games."

From 1995-2002, Conrady was the head men's basketball coach at North Greenville College in South Carolina. He also has basketball coaching stops at Mars Hill (assistant coach from 1990-95), Presbyterian (assistant coach from 1989-90) and Furman (graduate assistant from 1987-89).

Conrady earned a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Physical Education from Furman in 1987. He and his wife, Becky, have two children: Andrew and Faith Ann.
