Covenant Golfers Finish Second at Piedmont Invitational

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -- Led by a strong final day performance from freshman Levi Nix, the Covenant men's golf team placed second at the Piedmont Invitational held at The Orchard Golf & Country Club on Tuesday morning in Clarkesville.

Covenant finished with a team score of 609 for the Invitational after a day two round of 304. Young Harris College took the event as they tallied a 597. Emmanuel College, Oglethorpe University, Piedmont College, and Truett-McConnell also participated in the event. Young Harris' Clark Melton shot a 73 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 145 which gave him the top individual spot.

Nix followed a day one score of 76 with a final round 74 for a two-day total of 150, putting him in a tie for fifth place. Fellow freshman James Van Nice posted a 75 for the second consecutive day to also have a 150 for the tournament. Both Nix and Van Nice were named to the all-tournament team.

Sophomore Trey Patterson was not far behind his teammates as he shot a 153 for the tournament following a final round 77. Cameron Lewis finished with an overall score of 156 after a pair of 78s.

Covenant's lone female golfer, Maggie Mauze, produced a 92 for a second straight day as she finished in the middle of the leaderboard among roughly 60 female participants.

Both Covenant teams will be back on the course when they travel to Toccoa, Ga., on September 24-25 for the Emmanuel Invitational.
