Men's Hoops Stymied at William Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Covenant men's basketball team fell to William Peace, 76-63, on Saturday evening from the Hermann Athletic Center.

The Scots fall to 9-6 on the year and 6-2 in the USA South. William Peace improves to 7-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Zack Allen paced Covenant with 14 points and six rebounds. Ryan Billig was the next leading scorer with 10 as Will Crumly led the way with four assists. 

The Scots got off to a hot start going on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes but could not hit another field goal until 9:09 to go until the break. The Pacers took a, 9-8, lead on a pair of Ti'Quan Whitmore free throws with 13:44 left in the half. 

Covenant knotted things back up at 17 on a pair of Allen free throws with 7:33 remaining in the half but the Pacers answered ending the opening half on a 21-7 run and go into the break with a 38-24 advantage.

The lead proved to be too much as the Scots could not cut into single digits, despite outscoring William Peace in the second half. With 14:54 left in the game, a James Mitchell 3-pointer cut the score to 10 but the Pacers responded with a 14-2 spurt and took a 59-37 lead with under seven minutes to play.

This contest marks the first time William Peace has come out with a win over the Scots in eight all-time meetings.

Cameron Ferguson led the Pacers with 17 points and Beau Bryant paced the team with eight boards. 

William Peace took advantage of 21 Covenant turnovers for 29 points and outscored the Scots in the paint (30-24), and in bench scoring (62-21) while winning the battle on the boards 32-24.

The Pacers shot 51.9 percent (27-for-52) overall and 8-for-24 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range. William Peace went 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Scots had a 45.8 percent (22-for-49) effort from the floor while shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from distance. Covenant shot 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.


The Scots continue their road trip as they travel to LaGrange on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
