CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team fell to Chattanooga 86-54 on Saturday afternoon from inside McKenzie Arena.
The game was played as an exhibition for both teams as they will open up their regular season in two weeks.
The Scots were paced by Chris Barnette with 13 points and five assists. Barnette went 5-for-8 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
Zack Allen was the next highest scorer with eight to go with a pair of rebounds and an assist.
After a back-and-forth first half the Mocs hit a jumper with three seconds remaining to gain their largest lead of the half at 34-28. Jared Jauch then answered with a three-quarter court shot that went in at the buzzer to trim the lead to three heading into the half.
The second half was all Chattanooga as the Mocs had a 13-0 run over the first six and a half minutes to stretch the lead to 16.
Covenant hit their first bucket of the second half from Jeremiah Sanabria with 14:21 remaining.
The Mocs run proved to be too much for the Scots though as Chattanooga grabbed their largest lead of the night at 34 points with 17 seconds remaining.
Quentin Steele hit a pair of free throws with just a second remaining to make the final 86-54.
Covenant was able to grab an early lead making the first bucket of the game 1:16 seconds into the contest.
The Scots eventually had a five-point lead with 11:03 left in the first half before the Mocs took over for the rest of the game with 1:37 remaining in the half.
Chattanooga saw five different players score in double figures.
The Mocs were led offensively by David Jean-Baptiste with 19 points and six assists. Rod Johnson was a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards to go with three assists.
Covenant's bench outscored their counterparts 25-24 led by Allen with eight.
The Scots open up their regular season on the road against Birmingham Southern as part of the Lon Varnell Classic on the campus of the University of the South on Nov. 8th. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m.
