FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For a fourth consecutive year, the Covenant men's basketball team has been voted as the USA South Team Sportsmanship Award winner for the sport, announced the league on Friday.
The men's basketball team, under second-year head coach Neal Young, is one of two Covenant programs to earn a team sportsmanship award in 2018-19, joining the volleyball program.
Covenant had a banner year as the Scots claimed the USA South West Division regular season title, the first conference regular season championship for the program in 55 years. The Scots finished 18-9 overall, setting a program record for winning percentage in a single-season, and had the USA South Coach of the Year in Neal Young and the Player of the Year in sophomore Will Crumly.
The conference hands out a Sportsmanship Award for 12 conference-sponsored team sports. Men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, along with men's golf are not included due to a lack of a conference schedule in those particular sports. For each of the other sports, all team members vote for the teams he/she deemed to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award.
The men's basketball team joins men's soccer, baseball, and volleyball as the only Covenant programs to win a USA South Team Sportsmanship award in four straight seasons.
Over the course of the year, the institution that wins the most individual sport awards is presented with the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of our campuses. Covenant has claimed at least a share of the USA South Sportsmanship Trophy in each of the last five years.
