MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant men's basketball team used a 19-0 run in the second half to erase a 12-point deficit and held on for a 73-72 victory at Huntingdon in a USA South clash inside Roland Arena on Friday night.
Covenant (13-7, 12-1 USA South) trailed 62-50 with just under 12 minutes remaining, but scored 19 straight points to grab a 69-62 lead. Huntingdon (9-11, 6-7 USA South) responded and had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but Isaiah King's 3-point attempt was off the mark as Covenant hung on for the one-point victory.
The win for Covenant keeps the Scots on top in the USA South West Division. Coupled with a LaGrange loss earlier on Friday, the Scots lead the division by two games with five regular season contests left.
Will Crumly scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Covenant. Bailey Spragg and James Mitchell had 13 points apiece, while Spragg had six assists and three steals. Mitchell Hollis added 10 points and Daevon Platt and William Bryan scored seven each.
Covenant led by one (41-40) at halftime, but Huntingdon outscored the Scots 22-9 over the first eight-plus minutes of the second half, including an 18-4 spurt, to take a 62-50 lead after a Scotty Chadwick 3-pointer.
However, Covenant locked down defensively and capitalized on opportunities on the offensive end to regain control. The Scots held Huntingdon scoreless for over eight minutes and used a 19-0 run during that span to grab a 69-62 lead with over five minutes remaining. Crumly had six points during the stretch, while the Scots forced the Hawks into three turnovers and 0-for-10 from the field.
Up 73-66 after a Platt layup with 2:43 left, Covenant would have to once again rely on its defense to seal the win.
Huntingdon sliced the lead to just one (73-72) after a James Harris layup with 31 seconds left. After an empty offensive possession from the Scots, Huntingdon had one last chance to win the game, but King's attempt from deep missed the mark.
Kyante Pines had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks in the defeat. Harris had 12 points and five assists, while BJ Barker had 11 points off the bench. Huntingdon shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the floor and 6-of-7 at the foul line.
Covenant shot 61.5 percent in the first half to take a 41-40 lead into the break. Crumly, Hollis, Spragg, and Mitchell all had eight points in the opening period as Covenant led for the majority of the half.
For the game, the Scots connected on 56.3 percent (27-of-48) with seven 3-pointers and a 12-of-15 effort at the foul line.
Covenant travels to face LaGrange in a key USA South game on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
