Men’s Basketball Wins 77-59, Remains Undefeated in USA South

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's basketball team remained unbeaten in conference play after earning a decisive, 77-59, victory over Methodist on Friday night in front of an energetic crowd inside Barnes PE Center.

The win moves the Scots (8-6, 7-0 USA South) to a perfect 7-0 in USA South play, continuing a program record start to a conference season. Methodist (7-9, 5-3 USA South) has dropped two straight games.

Reigning USA South Player of the Week Will Crumly led all players with 29 points and 13 rebounds, earning his sixth double-double in the past seven games. Crumly was 11-of-15 from the field and 7-of-8 at the foul line. It was the fifth straight game Crumly scored at least 27 points.

Covenant used a strong second half to earn the win, outscoring Methodist 44-27 in the second period. Covenant hit six 3-pointers in the second half after being held to just two in the first and went 10-of-13 from the foul line.

Covenant trailed for almost 19 minutes of the first half. With 1:39 left in the half, William Bryan sunk two free throws to make it a tie game at 29-29. A Noah Oetjen layup gave the Scots a 33-32 lead with 25 seconds to go and Covenant took that edge into the break.

The Scots came out strong in the second half. Covenant jumped out to a 45-38 lead on a Tavian Roundtree 3-pointer at the 15:59 mark. Another 3-pointer by James Mitchell extended the lead to 10, making it 48-38 with 15:15 to go.

The Scots extended the lead to 14 after a Mitchell Hollis 3-pointer with 5:39 to play and a 62-48 score. With 2:55 remaining, Mitchell sunk a 3-pointer to give the Scots a 16-point advantage, 69-53.

Crumly threw down a dunk in the final minute to put an exclamation point on the win and give the Scots their biggest lead of the game at 20 points.

James Mitchell scored 15 points for Covenant. Bailey Spragg helped out with 11 points and five assists, while Hollis added seven points and five rebounds. Covenant shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field and 15-for-19 from the free throw line. The Scots outrebounded the Monarchs 36-26.

Dante Burden led Methodist with 18 points. Kaymon Mitchell had 12 points. Methodist shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the floor.
