MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- The Covenant men's basketball team used a double-double from Will Crumly (27 points, 11 rebounds) and 21 points from Bailey Spragg to snap a three-game losing streak and defeat Pfeiffer, 87-66, in USA South action on Saturday afternoon.
Covenant (6-6, 5-0 USA South) remains perfect in conference play and atop the USA South West Division standings. The 5-0 start in the USA South continues a program-record start to conference play in a season.
Crumly notched his fifth straight double-double after shooting 13-of-19 from the field to collect a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. It was the seventh double-double of the season for Crumly, the most by a Scot in a single-season since 2003-04.
Spragg scored 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting with three 3-pointers to go with six assists and four rebounds. James Mitchell hit 4-of-5 triples and finished with 12 points, while Noah Oetjen had 11 points and four assists.
The Scots used prolific shooting throughout the contest as the visitors never trailed. Covenant shot a season-best 61.5 percent (32-of-52) from the floor with 14 3-pointers. It was the third time this season, and the second straight game, the Scots eclipsed 60 percent shooting in a contest.
Covenant surged ahead 17-3 in the first four-plus minutes of action as Spragg and Crumly combined for 14 of the Scots' 17 points. The lead was briefly trimmed to single digits twice in the first half, but Pfeiffer would only get as close as eight. A 12-2 run midway through the first half extended Covenant's lead to 31-13 after back-to-back buckets from Crumly with 8:44 left in the period.
The Scots shot 58.1 percent (18-of-31) in the first half with eight 3-pointers en route to a 46-31 lead. Crumly had 19 of his 27 points in the half.
Covenant continued to stymie one of the top offenses in the USA South in the second half. The margin climbed to 21 after consecutive 3-pointers from Oetjen made it 60-39 with 14:49 remaining. The Scots took their largest lead of the day at 23 (87-64) on a Ryan Gilbert trey in the final minute.
Mitchell Hollis added eight points and three assists for Covenant. The Scots had 19 assists on 32 made field goals.
Pfeiffer (5-6, 0-4 USA South) was led by Tyjarek Simmons' 18 points off the bench. Kyle Riddley, the leading scorer in the USA South coming into the day, was held to nine points on 3-of-8 shooting. The Falcons, the top scoring team in the conference, were limited to a season-low 66 points and 31.9 percent shooting (23-of-72).
Covenant will travel to USA South foe Berea on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
