LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- James Mitchell hit seven 3-pointers and Berto Dryden eclipsed 1,000 career points as the Covenant men's basketball team won its eighth straight game with an 84-58 drubbing of Brevard on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.
The win closed out the regular season home schedule for Covenant (16-8), which finished 9-1 on its home court. The eight-game win streak continues a program record for the NCAA era.
Entering the game, Dryden needed eight points to reach 1,000 for his collegiate career. The senior knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:44 left in the second half to eclipse the milestone mark before being taken out of the game to a standing ovation. Dryden finished with nine points and four assists on the night.
Covenant opened up a 20-point halftime lead thanks in large part to Mitchell's shooting from deep. Mitchell hit 6-of-7 3-point attempts in the half and led all scorers with 18 points in the period as the Scots took a large lead into the break. Caleb Haynes and Will Crumly also tallied double-digit points in the first 20 minutes as Haynes scored 10 points with six rebounds and Crumly added 12 points and six boards.
The Scots shot 44.4 percent from the field in the first half, but made 7-of-12 from beyond the 3-point line. Brevard struggled from the field as the visiting Tornados were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes at one point during the period as Covenant built a double-digit lead.
Covenant then shut the door on any Brevard comeback attempt early in the second half. A 15-5 run, capped by back-to-back buckets from Patjo Twagirayezu, gave the Scots a 63-34 lead with 13:27 left. The lead peaked at 32, 68-36, with 12:39 remaining after another Twagirayezu basket.
Mitchell finished with 21 points and was 7-of-9 from deep. Crumly had 18 points, Haynes 15 and Twagirayezu scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. The Scots ended the game shooting 46.4 percent (32-of-69) from the floor with 12 3-pointers.
Brevard (4-18) got 15 points from its senior, Stevie Williams. Williams also had four rebounds and two assists in his final college game. JaMarquis Johnson and Levi Lamb each had 10 points for the Tornados, who shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) for the game.
Covenant will end the regular season on Saturday at Piedmont in a key USA South matchup. Tip-off in Demorest, Ga., is set for 4 p.m.
