CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team opened the season with a 78-76 exhibition win over NCAA Division II member Lee on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland.
The game was an exhibition for both teams. Covenant will open the season officially on Nov. 15 at Oglethorpe.
The 3-pointer was working all afternoon for Covenant as the team hit 15 treys on 31 attempts. Mitchell had five of those 3-pointers and Crumly added four. The Scots shot 46 percent from the field in the contest.
The Scots fell behind by as many as 11 in the first half, but ended the first 20 minutes on a 22-6 run to gain a 43-38 lead heading into the break as a Crumly 3-pointer capped the run.
The game was tight throughout the second half, but Covenant never trailed. Up by one in the final 30 seconds, Haynes knocked down a pair of free throws to up the margin to three and on the next possession Jared Jauch made 1-of-2 at the line for a 78-76 lead. On Lee's final possession, Ben Moore blocked the potential game-tying layup from Lee's Chase Cullen with four seconds left. Cullen grabbed the rebound, but missed the ensuing jumper as time wound down.
Ryan Montgomery led Lee with a game-high 26 points.
Covenant will begin the season on Nov. 15 at Oglethorpe.
