FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- After averaging nearly a double-double in two victories last week, Covenant men's basketball freshman Caleb Haynes was named USA South Rookie of the Week, announced the league on Monday.
Haynes is the second Covenant player to garner a men's basketball weekly honor from the USA South this season. Patjo Twagirayezu was the conference's Player of the Week on Nov. 28. The honor is the first of Haynes' career.
Haynes, a freshman from Section, Ala., averaged 11.0 points, eight rebounds and one assist per game and shot 73.3 percent from the field to help Covenant to a 2-0 week. The freshman scored a season and career-high 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting with eight rebounds, one assist and one block in a 73-60 win at Millsaps on Friday. Haynes then totaled eight points and eight boards with an assist and steal in a 78-70 win at Belhaven on Saturday. The eight rebounds in both games marked the second and third times this year Haynes has grabbed eight boards in a contest.
On the year, Haynes has played in all 11 games and is averaging 5.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 58.3 percent from the field.
Covenant (6-5) hosts USA South foe LaGrange on Friday at 5:30 p.m. inside Barnes PE Center.
