NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team led early in the first half, but Division I member Tennessee State would recover and take an 81-50 victory over the Scots on Tuesday night at the Gentry Center.
The game was an exhibition for Covenant (4-5), while it counted for Tennessee State (9-3).
Patjo Twagirayezu gave Covenant a 2-0 lead on the opening possession of the game and the Scots held that lead until the host Tigers' Darreon Reddick connected on a 3-pointer at the 18:45 mark. Tennessee State would lead 47-24 at the half.
In the second half, Tennessee State extended its lead and would cruise to the win.
Twagirayezu led Covenant with 16 points and five rebounds, while Bailey Spragg added 11 points and two steals. Nick Palmer added seven points off the bench and Connor Sears and Caleb Haynes had five points apiece.
Tennessee State, which fell at Duke last week by 10, had four players score in double figures led by Reddick's 17 points. Wayne Martin had a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds and Tahjere McCall contributed 11 points. A'Torey Everett also recorded double digits with 10 points. The Tigers shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57).
Covenant will get back into regular season action on Friday and Saturday with a trip to Jackson. Miss. The Scots face Millsaps on Friday at 6 p.m. CST, before playing Belhaven on Saturday at 5 p.m. CST.
