LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The road to defending the USA South championship is set for the Covenant men's basketball program as the 2016-17 schedule has been released for first year head coach Arte Culver. The schedule features five NCAA Division III Tournament teams from 2016 along with 14 USA South games.
Additionally, Covenant will play a pair of exhibitions against NCAA Division I opponents. For a second straight year, the Scots will make the short drive to McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn., to face off with Division I neighbor Chattanooga in an exhibition on Friday, Nov. 4. Chattanooga won the Southern Conference title and made the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Covenant will also square off with Tennessee State on Dec. 27 in Nashville, Tenn.
The Arte Culver era officially gets underway on Nov. 15 with a home contest against Emory, who eliminated the Scots from the 2016 NCAA Tournament. That game is set to start at 7:30 p.m., after the women's contest with Sewanee.
On Nov. 18-19, Barnes Physical Education Center will host four games as Covenant welcomes Emory & Henry, LaGrange, and University of Dallas for a weekend classic. The Scots take on Dallas on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m., after LaGrange plays Emory & Henry at 5:30. On Nov. 19, Covenant will play Emory & Henry at 6 p.m. following the LaGrange-Dallas game at 4 p.m.
Covenant will hit the road for the first time on Nov. 22 with a contest at Birmingham Southern, another NCAA Tournament team from last year. The Scots continue the road swing at Sewanee on Nov. 29.
After a home date with Oglethorpe on Dec. 6, Covenant will travel across the country to the Pacific Northwest to face a pair of 2016 NCAA Tournament participants in Whitworth (Dec. 9) and Whitman (Dec. 10).
USA South play opens on Dec. 17 at Ferrum before the team takes off for Christmas Break. Covenant will travel to Jackson, Miss., to play Millsaps (Dec. 30) and Belhaven (Dec. 31) to conclude the 2016 portion of the schedule.
After New Year's, Covenant plays three straight conference games at home, the first of which is against LaGrange in a rematch of the 2016 USA South Tournament final on Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. The Scots then face Huntingdon (Jan. 7) and Maryville (Jan. 10) to complete the homestand.
Following a four-game road trip against USA South teams, the Scots return home in late January to face N.C. Wesleyan (Jan. 27), William Peace (Jan. 28) and Sewanee (Jan. 31). The final two home games of the year are set for Feb. 11 against Averett and Feb. 18 vs. Piedmont.
The USA South Tournament runs from Feb. 23-25 and will be hosted by the No. 1 seed in the field. The top eight teams will qualify for the tournament.
- LaGrange, Emory, Birmingham Southern, Whitworth and Whitman all made the NCAA Tournament last season. Emory and Whitman both advanced to the Sweet 16.
- The meetings with Dallas, Whitworth and Whitman will be the first all-time between the programs.
- This will be the third time in the last four years Covenant has played an exhibition against Chattanooga.
