Men's Basketball Adds Hollis for 2016-17

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Mitchell Hollis, a senior at Pope High School (Marietta, Ga.), has committed to attend Covenant College and play basketball for head coach Kyle Taylor beginning in the fall of 2016.

Hollis was his team's Offensive MVP after averaging 13 points per game and shooting 43 percent from 3-point land his senior year. The 5-foot-10 guard helped the Greyhounds and head coach Patrick Abney to the state tournament three times, including twice in class 6A.

"I believe Covenant is the perfect place for me," Hollis said. "When I came on my visit I fell in love with the basketball program. Everybody from players to the coaching staff is a close knit group, and are very dedicated. I felt like it was a special place, and I wanted to be a part of it. I also loved the Christian environment on campus, and am looking forward to being a student at Covenant."

"In my 23 years of coaching, Mitchell is the best character kid I have ever gotten to coach," Abney said. "He is a strong Christian kid who has his priorities in place. He was a phenomenal leader for us."

In his senior year, Hollis was recognized with the Pope High School Positive Male Athlete Award. Hollis was also named to the All-Region honorable mention team in Region 5 Class 6A, which is one of the toughest regions in the state of Georgia.

"We are excited that Mitchell has selected Covenant College," Taylor said. "He will be a tremendous fit in our basketball program. Mitchell is a true teammate who has a great attitude, is a fierce competitor, and is relentless. His ability to shoot the 3-pointer will stretch defenses, and his ball handling and decision making will fit nicely into our offensive scheme."

Hollis has a strong family background in basketball. His step-father, Chuck Liston, played basketball at Oklahoma State and then professionally overseas in Luxembourg.

Hollis was a successful student at Pope where he graduated with a 3.5 GPA and Honors. He plans on studying Education at Covenant. He is the son of Craig Hollis and Shelli Liston.
