Mitchell Commits to Covenant Men's Basketball

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- James Mitchell, a senior at Stratford Academy (Macon, Ga.), has committed to attend Covenant College and play basketball for head coach Kyle Taylor starting in the fall of 2016.

Mitchell had a very successful career at Stratford. He was a part of a state championship team in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) as a sophomore, and finished in the Elite Eight and Final Four in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class A state tournament his junior and senior years, respectively. Overall, Mitchell's teams went a combined 79-16 during his four years.

"James played for me for all four years," said Jamie Dickey, Mitchell's high school coach. "He was the smartest kid I ever coached. It was like having another coach on the floor. James is a true leader who leads by example. He always put the team first."

In addition to being a leader for a very successful high school program, Mitchell excelled as a 3-point specialist for Stratford. He is 10th all-time in the program's history in both 3-pointers made in a season and career. Mitchell was named to the All-Middle Georgia honorable mention team as a senior.

"I wanted to be a part of a great program," said Mitchell about his decision to come to Covenant. "I wanted to be able to play college basketball while still getting a quality education. I think that Covenant has both a good basketball program and a quality education, and that's why I chose to come here."

"We are thrilled to add James Mitchell to our Scots Basketball family," Taylor said. "He comes to Covenant from an excellent high school program that made the state Final Four in their classification in GHSA this season. James is a great 3-point shooter, who also has a lot of intangibles that will make our program better."

Off the court, Mitchell excelled in the classroom as he holds a 4.1 GPA and was a Macon Sports Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete in 2016. Mitchell is undecided on a major. He is the son of John and Lisa Mitchell.
