Men's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Ben Phelps scored a career-high 19 points, but the Covenant men's basketball team was on the short end on Tuesday night as Sewanee took a 64-51 victory over the Scots inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The loss is the second straight for the Scots and moves them to 3-2 overall. Sewanee improves to 4-1. The two teams end their season series with a split with the home teams taking each contest.

Phelps was 7-of-10 from the field with five 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 19 in the second half. The junior also added three rebounds and a steal. TJ Cox tallieed 16 points, three assists and two steals.

Covenant struggled from the field all game. Sewanee limited the Scots to 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor and 33.3 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Sewanee received 19 points off the bench from Seth Brown, while Keshonn Carter registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Clay Born poured in 11 points and nine rebounds. For a second time this season, Covenant held Sewanee's leading scorer Jorden Williams to single-digit scoring as he recorded three points on the night.

Sewanee took a 33-23 lead at halftime as the host Tigers shot 56 percent from the field. Phelps and Cox kept the Scots within striking distance as they combined for 17 of Covenant's 23 points in the period.

The Tigers scored the first seven points of the second half to extend their lead to 40-23 after a Born 3-pointer with 16:55 left. Covenant climbed back to within nine at 46-37 after Cox drained a 3-pointer with 10:17 left. A Chris Boyd layup cut the Covenant deficit to 55-47 with 5:29 remaining.

Both teams traded empty possessions for the next two minutes before Sewanee's Williams drained a 3-pointer, his only made field goal of the game, as the shot clock expired with 3:09 remaining to bring the Tigers lead up to 58-47. Covenant would get no closer the rest of the way.

Boyd finished with six points for the Scots and Patjo Twagirayezu led the team with six rebounds.
