LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's basketball program, under seventh-year head coach Kyle Taylor, has released its 2015-16 schedule. The Scots are set to play 25 regular season contests in addition to two exhibition games against NCAA Division I competition.
Covenant will open the exhibition portion of its schedule on Nov. 6 against Division I neighbor Chattanooga. Tip-off at McKenzie Arena will be at 7 p.m. and ticket information will be announced at a later date. The contest will also count as an exhibition for Chattanooga.
The following week, the Scots travel to Virginia to face Liberty in the final exhibition contest on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Covenant will officially open the 2015-16 season on Nov. 14 at Emory & Henry in Emory, Va., at 2 p.m.
The home opener will be on Nov. 17 when Sewanee comes to Lookout Mountain for a 7:30 p.m. tip. Covenant will then hit the road for three more contests with Oglethorpe (Nov. 21), Berry (Nov. 24) and Sewanee (Dec. 1) before returning home for four straight.
The four-game homestand starts on the weekend of Dec. 4-5 as Millsaps (Dec. 4) and Rhodes (Dec. 5) comes to Barnes Physical Education Center. Birmingham Southern will be the opponent on Dec. 12 and North Park will travel to Lookout Mountain for a noon tip-off on Dec. 21. The final non-conference game is Feb. 2 at Berea.
After a trip to Emory on Dec. 30, Covenant opens USA South play with three straight home games from Jan. 2-9 against LaGrange, Piedmont and Huntingdon. The Scots will also host Greensboro, Methodist, Ferrum and Maryville in conference play.
The top eight teams in the final USA South standings will qualify for the conference tournament. The tournament will run from Feb. 25-27 and hosted by the No. 1 seed.
- The meeting with Chattanooga will be the first since 2013. The Mocs defeated Covenant in that exhibition opener. That contest marked the first game for then UTC head coach Will Wade and this year's matchup will be the first for new Mocs head man Matt McCall.
- The Scots will also be the opener for new Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay. The two teams have met four times all-time with the last coming in 1999.
- Covenant will face two teams (Emory and LaGrange) who advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament a year ago.
- The contest with North Park will be the first matchup between the schools. North Park won five Division III titles from 1978-87.
