MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Colton McGriff scored 21 points and the Covenant men's basketball team went 25-of-28 from the free throw line in a 71-67 road victory at Huntingdon on Wednesday evening in USA South action.
The win moves Covenant (9-15, 7-6 USA South) one step closer to clinching a berth in the USA South tournament which begins next week. The Scots are in a four-way tie for fifth at the end of play on Wednesday. Huntingdon drops to 3-21 overall and 2-11 in league play.
McGriff scored his 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Covenant missed just three free throws for the game and went a perfect 6-of-6 from the line in the final minute of play to seal the win.
The Scots led 35-27 at halftime and stretched the lead to 50-32 with a 15-5 run in the first four minutes of the second half. McGriff scored five points during the stretch, including a three-point play that capped the run with 16:04 left in the period. Teron Ferguson converted an old-fashioned three-point play and TJ Cox added five points as Covenant took its largest lead of the game.
Huntingdon would claw its way back into the contest and eventually cut the Scots' lead to 69-67 with 10 seconds remaining after a Jerome Davis 3-pointer. Chris Boyd knocked down two more free throws on Covenant's next possession to secure the victory and a season sweep of the Hawks.
Joining McGriff in double figures scoring for Covenant was Cox with 11 points to go along with four rebounds. Micah Turner had nine points off the bench, while Ferguson chipped in seven with a pair of steals. Bryant Engbers and Boyd scored six apiece with Boyd collecting a team-high five rebounds. Will Portlock had three of Covenant's eight assists.
Covenant outrebounded Huntingdon 35-34 and shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field. The Scots scored 16 points off 17 Huntingdon turnovers.
Huntingdon had three players in double digits led by Andre Ashley's 16 points. Davis had 14 points and RJ Davis tallied 11 points in a reserve role. The Hawks were limited to 39.3 percent (22-of-56) shooting but did make 11 3-pointers.
Covenant will conclude its regular season on Saturday with a trip to USA South foe LaGrange. Tip-off at Mariotti Gym in LaGrange is scheduled for 2 p.m.
