OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Covenant men's basketball team opened its season on Saturday on the road at Stevenson. The visiting Scots suffered from cold shooting and fell 77-55 to the host Mustangs.
Chris Boyd and TJ Cox each had eight points to lead the Scots (0-1) in the losing effort. Cox also dished out a team-high four assists. Covenant shot just 37.5 percent (18-of-48) for the game with four 3-pointers.
Stevenson opened up a close game in the first half with a 13-0 scoring run to grab a 24-10 lead with 8:35 left in the half. Covenant would cut that lead to only six at 30-24 with 3:55 remaining in the half after a Ben Phelps 3-pointer capped a 14-6 run.
The Mustangs were able to extend their lead back to double digits before the half and took a 42-30 lead into the intermission.
Colton McGriff and Cox scored baskets on back-to-back Covenant possessions to trim the deficit back ti single digits at 42-34 less than a minute into the second half. That would be as close as the Scots would get the rest of the way as Stevenson pulled away for the victory.
Sean Farr led Stevenson (1-0) with 17 points and was 7-for-7 from the field. Christian Roberts chipped in 14 points, while Erik Fisher tallied eight rebounds.
Covenant will continue its road trip to Maryland on Monday when they travel to Towson to face Goucher. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
