LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Four different players scored in double figures, but the Covenant men's basketball team fell just short on Wednesday night as visiting Huntingdon scratched out an 84-81 victory inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
With the loss, Covenant drops to 8-15 on the season and 3-9 in the USA South. The defeat also means that the Scots will not qualify for the USA South tournament as the league only takes the top eight schools and Covenant currently sits three wins behind with two games remaining.
Huntingdon improves to 9-13 overall and 8-4 in league play.
The contest was back-and-forth throughout as it featured 10 ties and 21 lead changes. Covenant grabbed a 79-77 edge after a Robby Bell 3-pointer with 3:17 to go, but that would be the Scots' final lead of the night. Huntingdon's Austin Hill buried a 3-pointer with 2:53 left to give the Hawks an 80-79 lead.
Covenant had one last chance to tie the game and send it into overtime. Trailing 84-81 with 14 seconds left, Nate Frierson got off a 3-pointer from the right corner with just a few ticks left on the clock, but the shot hit the back iron and bounced away as time expired.
Colton McGriff led Covenant with 11 points to go with five rebounds. Chris Boyd registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Daniel Garrett and Frierson each had 10 points in the loss. Frierson dished out five assists and Will Portlock tallied four assists. The Scots had 17 assists on 26 made field goals. Covenant shot 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the field and made nine 3-pointers. The Scots also held a 43-42 rebounding edge.
Huntingdon received 28 points from its leading scorer Hill. Hill made 10-of-20 from the floor with six 3-pointers. Jerome Davis had 15 points and five assists and Jason Varney had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Covenant will have a quick turnaround as they face Piedmont on Thursday night in Demorest, Ga. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the Scots host LaGrange at 4 p.m. for Senior Night.
