MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team fell on the road on Wednesday night in USA South play to conference-leading Maryville 79-49 inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The loss is Covenant's third straight and moves the Scots to 8-13 overall and 3-7 in the USA South. Maryville keeps a stranglehold on top of the conference standings with a perfect 9-0 record and a 13-6 mark overall.
Chris Boyd led Covenant with 13 points to go along with four rebounds. Teron Ferguson added seven points and seven rebounds in a reserve role. Covenant was just 18-of-65 (27.7 percent) from the field. Covenant did make 11-of-14 free throws and held a 14-10 edge in offensive rebounds which led to 12 second-chance points.
Maryville got out to a quick start in the first half as they built a 24-9 lead nine minutes into the contest. The host Scots went into intermission with a 41-21 advantage. The lead would continue to grow for Maryville in the second half.
Four players scored in double figures for Maryville led by J.P. Burris' 13 points. Jaumonee Byrd had 11 points and seven rebounds, while Oscar Butler and Joey Bodewig had 10 apiece. The hosts shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field with nine 3-pointers.
Covenant will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 10 when they host Piedmont inside Barnes Physical Education Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m., or 25 minutes after the women's game concludes.
