Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Jan. 27-Feb. 1)

Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Jan. 27-Feb. 1)

It was a short week in Covenant athletics as winter weather paralyzed much of the south. Still, the basketball teams were able to get in one contest on Saturday, but both were defeated by Huntingdon.

6: Number of turnovers by the men's basketball team in Saturday's loss at Huntingdon. It was the fewest number of turnovers committed by the Scots in the Division III era and the fewest going back to the 2003-04 season. The fewest turnovers in a game before Saturday was seven against Montreat in the AAC Tournament on Feb. 24, 2006.

2: With last Wednesday's postponed basketball games vs. Piedmont, it marked the second straight year that the men's basketball team has had a game canceled or postponed against the Lions. Last season, Covenant was scheduled to play Piedmont in late January, but the Lions had to cancel the second semester of their season. Hopefully the two schools will be able to play their scheduled games next week.

5: Number of days until spring sports begin. Men's tennis is at Gadsden State on Saturday to open the season. Women's tennis and softball begin on Feb. 15, while the baseball team starts its year on Feb. 18.

For a second straight year, women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for her work in the classroom and on the court... Men's basketball junior Nate Frierson was also voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team... The postponed basketball games from last Wednesday vs. Piedmont, have been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 10 (women at 5:30, men at 7:30)... Also, the basketball games at Piedmont have been moved to Thursday, Feb. 13... USA South preseason polls were released for softball, men's and women's tennis, and men's golf last week.
