Basketball teams continued their USA South schedules this week. The women lost all three contests (Maryville, N.C. Wesleyan and William Peace), including one in overtime, but one player had a historic day (more on that below). The men snapped their five-game losing streak with a victory at William Peace on Saturday following losses at Sewanee and N.C. Wesleyan earlier in the week.
BY THE NUMBERS:
22: Number of rebounds collected by women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship in Saturday's loss at William Peace. The number ties a school record previously set nearly 29 years ago by Kristin Baker on Feb. 5, 1985 against Reinhardt. It was also the first time since Clair Lowe on Feb. 18, 2000 that a Covenant player had registered at least 20 rebounds in a contest.
7: Continuing the Blankenship theme, this reflects the number of consecutive double-doubles by the senior. Blankenship has posted a double-double in all seven USA South games this season and is averaging 17.3 points and 13.4 rebounds per game in conference play. She has eight double-doubles on the season and 29 in her illustrious career.
100: The 3-point shooting percentage for men's basketball freshman Ben Phelps in two USA South games last week. Phelps regained his 3-point stroke after a couple of tough games by going 6-for-6 from downtown combined against N.C. Wesleyan and William Peace. For the year, Phelps is connecting on 48.4 percent from deep, which leads the conference.
4: Number of times this season that men's basketball junior Colton McGriff has scored at least 26 points in a game. McGriff tallied a game-high 26 points in Saturday's 78-76 win over William Peace. Additionally, the junior has seven games of at least 20 points this year.
Both basketball teams will be on the road on Wednesday at LaGrange starting at 5:30 p.m. ... The men's team last beat LaGrange on the road in the 2011-12 season, 77-72...
