Scots Drop Fourth Straight at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's basketball team suffered from a cold shooting night as they dropped a 68-51 decision at Sewanee in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Juhan Gymnasium.

The loss is the fourth straight for Covenant and drops the Scots to 6-9 overall. Sewanee improves to 9-4 on the year and the Tigers extended their home winning streak to 13 games. The last team to defeat Sewanee inside Juhan Gymnasium was Covenant last season.

The Scots connected on 39.3 percent (22-of-56) for the game and 30.4 percent in the first half. Covenant struggled in the opening 20 minutes, but trailed just 22-16 at the half.

Colton McGriff began to heat up in the second half as he scored 13 of the first 20 points for the Scots. Still, Covenant trailed anywhere between five and eight points for much of the period before Sewanee went on a run late in the half. The Tigers scored 13 unanswered points over a span of three-and-a-half minutes to stretch the lead to 60-41 with two minutes remaining.

McGriff led Covenant with 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Bryant Engbers came off the bench to score 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in 23 minutes. Chris Boyd chipped in six points and Z Arima had a team-high three assists.

Covenant turned the ball over just nine times, a stark contrast to the 32 committed in Saturday's loss to Greensboro, but the Scots were outrebounded 39-27. Sewanee made 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field and drained nine 3-pointers.

Sewanee had three players in double figures scoring led by Jorden Williams' 19 points. Seth Brown added 16 points and Leo Born had 10, while both players grabbed six rebounds apiece. The Tigers were 11-of-13 from the foul line.

Covenant will travel to North Carolina for a pair of USA South contests this weekend. The Scots face North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday, followed by a tilt against William Peace on Saturday.
