Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Dec. 30-Jan. 4)

Happy New Year! Covenant basketball teams rang in the new year over the weekend as they opened USA South play. The women fell to an undefeated Ferrum squad on Friday, but then responded with a strong effort in a 75-72 win over Averett on Saturday. The men pulled out a tough victory on Friday 71-68 over Ferrum with a late rally. On Saturday, the men stumbled down the stretch and lost to Averett.

BY THE NUMBERS:

1: The number of program victories in the USA South for both basketball teams. This past weekend marked the first games in the new conference. The women defeated Averett, while the men claimed a victory over Ferrum.

3: Number of double-doubles on the year for women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship. Blankenship had two such games over the weekend as she scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Ferrum, then totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Averett. The senior's other double-double this year came against Berry in the opening game.

5: Number of players that scored in double figures in the women's basketball victory over Averett. Blankenship had 16 points, Kiaira Cooper and Morgan Woodward each had 14, while Alexis Storteboom and Aleigha Williams had 13 and 10, respectively. It marked the first time since Nov. 15, 2012 against Hiwassee that five players scored in double digits for the Scots.

11: Number of points in his 2013-14 debut for men's basketball sophomore Daniel Garrett on Friday against Ferrum. Garrett, who sat out the first semester, scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and had the tiebreaking 3-pointer late in the second half to propel Covenant to the 71-68 win.

48.9: 3-point percentage on the season for men's basketball freshman Ben Phelps. Phelps connected for five 3-pointers over the weekend and currently ranks third in the USA South in 3-point percentage. He has made 22 3-pointers this season despite averaging only 14.2 minutes per game.

NOTES:

Both basketball teams will be back in action inside Barnes Physical Education Center this Friday and Saturday when they host Methodist (Friday) and Greensboro (Saturday)... The men's basketball team won just their second game of the year when shooting below 40 percent with Friday's win over Ferrum in which they shot 39.7 percent... The women's soccer team was awarded the NSCAA Silver Award for Team Ethics for a second straight year last week.
