Men's Basketball Preview: Millsaps Comes to Lookout Mountain on Saturday

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's basketball team looks to make it two wins in a row when they host Millsaps on Saturday at 4 p.m. inside Barnes Physical Education Center. The Scots routed visiting Sewanee 73-55 on Wednesday night to move to 2-1 on the season.

The Majors are coming off a 72-68 loss at Rust on Tuesday… Ryan Berger and Tully Gilligan led four Majors in double figures with 19 points apiece… Berger added nine rebounds, while Murray Kastner had five assists… Only victory of the season came against East Texas Baptist 70-69 on Nov. 16 as the Majors came back from an eight-point deficit with just over a minute left to win on Ryan Berger's buzzer-beating 3-pointer… As a team, Millsaps is shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from 3-point territory while scoring 64.3 points per game... Leading scorer and rebounder is Berger as he averages 14.7 points per game (57.6 percent shooting) while grabbing seven rebounds per contest.

Tim Wise is in his 10th season as the head coach of the Majors.

Covenant Update: 2-1 overall, 0-0 USA South

Covenant won its home opener on Wednesday night 73-55 over Sewanee… Colton McGriff paced the Scots with 19 points and seven rebounds… Micah Turner and Ben Phelps each had 10 points, while Nate Frierson had a game-high six assists… Covenant shot a season-best 54.3 percent (25-46) from the field and 16-of-22 from the free throw line… From the 11:36 mark of the first half to the 14:08 point of the second half, Covenant outscored Sewanee 29-7 to open up a 22-point lead… The Scots dished out a season-high 15 assists on 25 made field goals… Covenant has already attempted 94 free throws this year in three games and is connecting at a 70.2 percent clip… Opponents have attempted 86 free throws, but are making just 58.1 percent… In all three games, Covenant has scored at least 71 points (averaging 75.3 for the year). Last year it took the Scots seven games before reaching the 70-point plateau… The Scots are shooting 44 percent as a team from the field, but just 28 percent from 3-point land... McGriff is the leading scorer (17.7 points per game) and rebounder (7.7 per contest) for the Scots.

Kyle Taylor is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Scots. He has increased the win total in each of his first four years. Overall coaching record stands at 32-73.
