Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Nov. 11-16)

Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Nov. 11-16)

Basketball season began over the weekend and the cross country teams wrapped up their seasons at NCAA regional meets. Both basketball teams went 1-1 with victories over Berry followed by losses to Millsaps (women) and Emory & Henry (men). Below is a look back on the week that was with stats, notes, and a little extra something at the end

BY THE NUMBERS:

23:58: The time that women's cross country junior Beth Burgess recorded in the 6k at the NCAA South regional meet on Saturday. The time broke a Covenant women's program record set back in 2010 by Hannah Matthews of 24:00. Burgess finished 42nd overall in the meet to complete a tremendous season.

9: Number of cross country runners that set new personal records on Saturday. On the women's side, Burgess was joined by Spookie Eaves, Anna Hankal and Alicia Zanoni to set new personal marks in the 6k. On the men's side, five runners posted new bests in the 8k including Stephen Dillon, Matt Gorter, Hunter Rasmussen, Jack Williams and Eliot Gardner.

2007: The last time that both men's and women's basketball teams began the season with victories. The teams claimed victories over Berry on Friday night with the women winning 72-60 before the men captured a 71-65 win. In 2007, both teams defeated Oakwood University.

1: Number of victories for the women's basketball program over Berry. It took some time to research, but we believe that Friday night's 72-60 at Berry was the first victory for the program over the school from Rome, Ga. If you have any information that says otherwise, please contact SID, Andrew Mindeman at andrew.mindeman@covenant.edu

21: Number of career double-doubles for women's basketball senior Jessie Blankenship. The senior added to her total with 17 points and 11 rebounds in Friday's win over Berry. Additionally, in four season openers during her career Blankenship has averaged 21.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per contest.

72: Number of free throws taken by the men's basketball team in two games over the weekend. The Scots made 24-of-41 in Friday's victory over Berry and then connected on 26-of-31 from the charity stripe in Saturday's 99-82 loss to Emory & Henry. By comparison, in 2012-13 it took the team six games to reach 72 free throw attempts. Obviously, the new rules and emphasis on hand-checking fouls have played a major role in the increased trips to the free throw line.

22: Points for men's basketball junior Colton McGriff in Friday's win over Berry. The total tied the career-high for McGriff which was originally set on January 11, 2012 at Maryville.

NOTES:

Home openers for the basketball teams are this week as the men and women host Sewanee on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. ... T-shirts will be given out to the first 300 fans in attendance on Wednesday... Both teams will also be at home on Saturday against Millsaps starting at 2 p.m. with the women's game
