Men's Basketball Announces More Recruits for 2013

Men's Basketball Announces More Recruits for 2013

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant head men's basketball coach Kyle Taylor recently announced his recruiting class for the upcoming season.

Six seniors departed after last season's 13-11 record making this recruiting year an important one for Taylor and assistant coach Brian Millar. Finding good shooters was an emphasis for Taylor and Millar and it appears the coaches were successful to that end.

Below is the second of two releases introducing the new players to the Covenant men's basketball program.

LUKE GLEASON - Tucson, Ariz.

Luke Gleason, a 5'10" point guard from Tucson, Ariz., is another solid point guard to enter into the mix.  Gleason was a four-sport star for Desert Christian High School and really thrived in basketball where he averaged 12 points, 8 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. "Luke is a tough, hard nosed, physical basketball player.  He will fit in great with our style of play and has the ability to be a great defender for us.  He is a capable shooter for a point and can even play off the ball if needed. He will provide added depth at the guard spot for us and will compete for a Varsity roster spot," said Taylor.  He is the son of Matt and Brandi Gleason.

DREW PIERCE - Matthews, N.C.

Drew Pierce, a 6'5" forward/post from Matthews, N.C., adds some much needed size to the 2013 recruiting class.  The Scots lost two of their three post players to graduation, and hope that Pierce can fill one of those voids.  Taylor remarked that "Drew is a physical post who has good size.  I believe with a couple years of hard work he can really develop into a quality post at our level. Drew is an outstanding person, hard worker, and I believe has a really bright future at Covenant". Pierce graduated from Covenant Day School where he played under the tutelage of Covenant College basketball alum Wade Tapp.  He is the son of John and Sandy Pierce.

TYDE COFFEY - Athens, Ala.

Tyde Coffey, a 6'3" wing/forward from Athens, Ala., is another outstanding perimeter shooter with good size for the 2013 Scots recruiting class.  Coffey played for Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, where he was a standout for four years on varsity.  Coffey averaged 16 points his senior year and connected on 42 3s.  "Tyde was one of the first on our radar screen during his junior year and one of the first to verbally commit to play with us at Covenant," said Taylor "I love Tyde's work ethic, his determination, and his attitude.  Tyde stood out to us because of his ability to knock down threes, mix it up on the low block, and rebound. Tyde wants to be a coach and has a solid basketball IQ." He is the son of Greg and Kathy Coffey.

JAY FINLAYSON - Greenville, Fla.

Jay Finlayson, a 6'1" guard from Greenville, Fla., was featured earlier in the summer for his FHSAA Academic All-State Award (one of 24 recipients in the entire state of Florida).  Finlayson was not only an incredible student, but also a three-sport varsity athlete at Aucilla Christian Academy. "Jay is the epitome of an NCAA student-athlete.  I'm really excited to see what he can do when he focuses all his efforts (athletically) on basketball.  Jay is a solid all-around basketball player.  Scrappy, good skill set, smart, and a great attitude.  Jay will be a spiritual leader for us as well early in his career," said Taylor.  Finlayson will major in Business and is the son of Mac and Mary Finlayson.

BRUNO KOMEL - Lake Worth, Fla.

Bruno Komel, a 6'2" wing from Lake Worth, Fla., via Sao Paolo, Brazil, is one of two players in the class of 2013 with international basketball experience.  Komel completed his final two-and-a-half years of high school at Lake Worth Christian. "Bruno is a big guard that has a college ready body.  He is a solid defender who can score in a myriad of ways.  Bruno has a great attitude, solid work ethic, and will do whatever it takes to help our team succeed.  He is the type of player you want in your program and will joyfully fill any role asked of him," remarked Taylor. He is the son of Peterson and Vera Komel.

GABE TCHIVIDJIAN - Pompano Beach, Fla.

Gabe Tchividjian, a 5'8" shooting guard from Pompano Beach, Fla., is a small but skilled scorer for the 2013 recruiting class.  "Gabe is a great kid and someone we are thrilled chose to come play basketball at Covenant. I love his motor and his energy.  He battled through a couple tough injuries this year to finish with a great senior year.  He can score and his scoring will be instrumental on our Junior Varsity team," said Taylor. Tchividjian played his high school ball at Calvary Christian Academy for Covenant College basketball alum Reed Crosson.  He is the son of Tullian and Kim Tchividjian.

CHRIS ELLIOTT - Istanbul, Turkey

Chris Elliott, a 6'4" wing from Istanbul, Turkey, is a little bit of an unknown for the Scots and another player with international basketball playing experience. "Chris came on our radar screen very late, but once we learned about him we snatched him up quickly.  Chris is a kid who grew up in Turkey. He is an incredible student and was attracted to Covenant because of our combination of college basketball, quality academics, and Christian community," said Taylor.  Elliott comes from the International Gateway Schools and plans to major in Pre-Engineering and Biblical and Theological Studies and will transfer to Georgia Tech to complete his degree. He is the son of Ralph and Elaine Elliott.

JOE WOMACK - Waynesville, N.C.

Joe Womack, a 6'1" shooting guard from Waynesville, N.C., will be another solid shooter for the Junior Varsity team at Covenant.  Womack played high school basketball at Haywood Christian where he had a stellar high school career. "Joe attended one of our basketball camps and we quickly identified him as a solid lefty 3-point shooter. Joe will fit in well at Covenant and be a great addition to our basketball family. I like Joe's demeanor and how he handles himself both on and off the court," said Taylor. He is the son of Patrick and Kathy Womack.

CHASE HARRINGTON - Hillsdale, Mich.

Chase Harrington, a 6'5" forward/post from Hillsdale, Mich., is a much needed post recruit for the 2013-14 Scots Junior Varsity team. Harrington played high school basketball at Will Carleton Academy.  "Chase is an inside-outside threat on offense, and will fit well in our 4-out continuity offense. He is a capable 3-point shooter for a post player and will be given opportunities to let if fly from long range. I love Chase's character, his attitude, and the way he goes about life," said Taylor. He intends to major in Early Childhood Education and is the son of Jeremy and Amy Harrington.

TAYLOR BROWN - Arlington, Tenn.

Taylor Brown, a 6'2" guard from Arlington, Tenn., will add depth at the guard spot for the Junior Varsity team. Brown hails from Arlington High School and intends to major in Pre-Engineering with a minor in Economics. "Taylor reached out to us early in the recruiting process and stayed committed to Covenant throughout. Taylor has the ability to develop into a solid guard for us.  Taylor does not have a lot of playing experience, but really wants to learn and is a very humble guy.  He always asks questions and is a sponge," commented Taylor.  He is the son of Roy Brown and Lindsay Jolly.
