ROME, Ga. -- After batting an even. 500 last week, Covenant baseball freshman outfielder Kenny Mills was named the USA South Rookie of the Week, for the period ending March 8, announced the conference on Monday.
Mills collects his first career weekly award and becomes the first Scot this year to earn a weekly accolade from the USA South.
A freshman from Stockbridge, Ga., Mills went a combined 7-for-14 (.500) with a .588 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage to go along with seven runs scored, five RBIs, one double, two home runs and three walks as the Scots posted a 4-0 record last week. Mills was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in a 16-3 win over Sewanee last Wednesday. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Averett, Mills was a combined 6-for-10 with six runs scored, four RBIs, one double, two home runs and three walks.
Mills had two three-hit games in the Averett series. The freshman went 3-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, four runs, and two walks in a 22-0 win in the series opener. In a 9-3 win in the finale, Mills was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. His two-homer game in the opener were his first two career home runs and he became the 12th player in program history, and the first since 2016, to hit two home runs in a game.
Mills is hitting .556 on the year with two homers, nine RBIs, and seven runs scored. The freshman has started five consecutive games in center field and is a combined 9-for-17 at the plate since being inserted into the lineup.
Covenant (10-4, 6-0 USA South) is off to its best overall start since 2013 and is 6-0 in the USA South for the first time after claiming a three-game sweep of Averett last weekend.
The Scots are back in action at home on Tuesday against Iowa Wesleyan (2 p.m.).
