LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A home-dominant schedule is set for the Covenant baseball program, under 14th-year head coach Doug Simons, as the slate was recently finalized for the 2020 season.

Covenant, coming off a 17-22 season and a USA South Tournament appearance, will play its first nine games of the season at home and is set for 26 contests atop Lookout Mountain. Barring scheduling changes due to weather, it will be the longest homestand to begin a year and the most home games for a season in the program's modern era.

The season starts on Feb. 7-8 when the Scots host Alice Lloyd for a three-game series, with game one on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday. It will mark the first time since 2008 that the Scots and Eagles have played. The Scots continue the homestand on Feb. 14-15 when Emory & Henry comes to town for a three-game set.

USA South play starts on Feb. 21-22 as Maryville travels to Lookout Mountain. The series is slated for a single game on Friday, Feb. 21 and a doubleheader (two, 9-inning games) on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Covenant then hits the road for the first time all year on Feb. 25 to face off with Birmingham Southern. That contest will be the first of two mid-week games with the Panthers, a squad that finished runner-up in the 2019 Division III World Series, as Covenant will host Birmingham Southern on March 17.

The Scots finish February with a three-game series with Emory. Game one will be on Lookout Mountain on Feb. 28, with the final two games taking place in Atlanta on Feb. 29. Covenant also has non-conference games with Sewanee (March 3 and March 31), Iowa Wesleyan (March 10), and Berry (April 7 and April 14).

In March, Covenant will host USA South series against Averett (March 6-7) and LaGrange (March 20-21) while traveling to Berea (March 13-14) and Huntingdon (March 27-28). In April, the Scots finish the home schedule with a three-game set with Piedmont (April 2-4) and Brevard (April 10-11) before heading to N.C. Wesleyan (April 17-18) to conclude the regular season.

The USA South Tournament is set to start on April 23 in Rocky Mount, N.C. and Wilson, N.C. The top eight teams in the USA South standings will qualify for the tournament.

  • Iowa Wesleyan is the lone new opponent on the schedule. The Tigers went 8-26-1 last season.
  • Covenant will face two 2019 NCAA Tournament teams in Birmingham Southern and LaGrange. Those two met in a NCAA regional last year before Birmingham Southern advanced all the way to the championship round of the World Series. Birmingham Southern finished No. 2 in the final Top 25, while LaGrange was No. 25.
  • Covenant and Alice Lloyd will meet for the first time in 12 years. The two squads last met in 2008, with Covenant taking both games, as members of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (NAIA).
  • The three games against Brevard will count towards league standings, but Brevard is ineligible for the USA South Tournament as the institution is in its final year of transition to Division III.
